SALISBURY POET’S RESIDENCE
We built this house about 20 years ago, for an author and passionate gardener. A relative of the poet laureate and an accomplished poet in his own right, the client desired a residence with a strong aesthetic that could hold up to his artistic sensibilities. The grounds feature extensive rock gardens, flowing from the main house, alongside several outbuildings, to the pool area. Two sheds featuring subtle tropical detailing flank the pool entrance gate. On account of this, as well as the house’s steep gables, pronounced cupola, and dynamic coloration, a rumored— though uncited— influence on the client’s design direction was the Jean Rhys classic Wide Sargasso Sea.
